Deserted Island

Am I ready to fly to the Bahamas in an airplane, over the ocean, nonetheless, with my best friend and my worst enemy? I think not! Apparently, though, I have no choice as Nick Salveres, my best friend, herds me through the doors of the plane and into my seat.

“It’s not going to be that bad, Bailey.” Nick says in his smooth, soothing voice as he plops down in the seat next to mine.

“Nick, you know I hate planes!” I whisper-yell as I shakily put on my seat belt.

Now, I should probably tell you a little bit about me. I, Bailey Elizabeth Emmens, hail from the glorious city of New York City, New York. You know, it’s not really all that it’s hyped up to be – people hustling and bustling day in and day out, crime happening right in front of everyone’s eyes most every day, and the weather really isn’t that awesome; yeah it’s really a great place to live… not! Being eighteen years old, I’m a senior at Stuyvesant High School who has straight A’s and attends mostly AP classes. I inherited my long, curly brown hair from my mom and the spray of freckles across my nose from my dad, but the shimmering, sea green eyes? Well, no one knows where those came from! Anyways, I’ve known Nick since we were merely two years old. Kaylee, well she just painted herself into the picture of my life, I guess.

The prettiest devil I’ve ever seen, with short, blonde, pixie-cut hair and light blue eyes, sat down with a “humph!” in the seat across from Nick and me.

“Why do we have to go on this stupid trip? I mean if it was just you and I, Nick, then it would be totally fine,” Kaylee said with a glimmer in her eyes.

Laughing nervously, Nick replied, “Umm… Kaylee? That’s a little bit… obsessive.”

“Oh well, you know, I like you. So if you ever need someone, I’m here.” she said with a mischievous grin as she put her hot pink earphones into her ears and turned on her music.

“Well that was a little odd,” I said to Nick as I put my head on his shoulder and yawned, “I’m going to sleep.”

~~ Three hours later ~~

“BAILEY! WAKE UP!” I faintly hear. Why am I wet? Why can’t I breathe right? I gasp and spit out water that had been held in my mouth like acorns in a chipmunk’s mouth.

“What’s going on?” I ask as I turn to face Nick’s also wet body. As I see his face, my gaze shifts past to see the endless blue ocean and the horrid remains of what once was our airplane.

“Oh my gosh…” I gasp as I look at Nick again, “Where’s Kaylee?”

“Ugh! I’m right here. My hair is ruined!!!” Kaylee says as she walks over to us, looking like a wet poodle.

Stifling a laugh at the sight of her, I ask, “What happened?”

“Well, the pilot just collapsed then everything just went downhill from there. Other people survived but I don’t know where they went,” Nick replies.

“And my luggage is all gone!!!” Kaylee whines.

“Kaylee shut up and concentrate. We are stranded on an island. With nothing to eat, drink, or communicate with! Nobody cares about your stuff!!” I snap. Thinking twice I say, “I’m sorry Kaylee. It’s just, well, we don’t need your luggage to survive.”

“I do. Just because you can live off of one outfit doesn’t mean I can!” Storming away from Nick and me, Kaylee huffs and goes off into the woods, stomping her feet to let us know that she’s angry.

“Maybe it’s better for now that she left. I mean, together you and I can do anything right?” Nick says, turning to me with a glimmer in his beautiful brown eyes. Whoa, wait a second… beautiful brown eyes? Well he is pretty cute. I mean, with those eyes and that smile and curly brown hair… Bailey stop. You’ve known this kid since you’ve been two. But it’s Nick… the boy who you grew up with, who you went on your first roller coaster with, all of those memories are with him. So why not?? Why not just, you know, go out with him or kiss him? Do something Bailey!

“So Nick I was thinking…” I start to share my thought but get rudely interrupted by the one, the only, Kaylee Morgansen.

“AHHHH!!! I just saw this… this… creature!!!” Kaylee screeches as she runs towards us, “Nick hold me!” She says as she rams into his strong body. We wait silently staring towards the forest for this “creature” to come out. The leaves rustle as if the wind is swaying them with its strong breath but we know that it isn’t the wind since we can’t feel it. Whimpering, Kaylee pushes against Nick as hard as she can to the point where he almost falls over. Suddenly, the “creature” comes out of the leaves and we put up our defense poses to feel the wrath of the evil… chipmunk??

“KAYLEE?!?! THAT’S A CHIPMUNK!!” Nick and I yell in unison as Nick pushes her away and the vicious chipmunk scampers back to its home.

“Well I thought that it was a lion or something. I’m sorry. Forgive me, Nick?” Kaylee sounds innocent as she looks up at Nick, batting her long eyelashes at him.

“Kaylee, this is ridiculous. Stop being overdramatic because I’m getting sick of it. You know what? I’m going to give you a job. Will you gather firewood for a campfire to keep us warm tonight? I would really appreciate it,” Nick says in the best voice that he can gather.

“Well, I’m not that much of a nature girl. But for you, sure. I’ll be back!” Kaylee runs away back into the forest.

“She’s finally gone,” Nick sighs as he turns toward me, “Bailey, can I tell you something that I’ve wanted to tell you for the longest time?”

I gaze up into his eyes. “Yeah, of course you can. You know you can tell me anything,” I smile, knowing that he really can tell me anything.

“Bailey… I like you a lot. I have since we were thirteen. Now we’re eighteen and when I say this, I mean it. I love you,” Nick mutters as he looks down at his dirty shoes and the white sand, seeming to be examining every little grain.

Lifting my chin with his finger, I say, “Nick, I love you too. As a best friend and more. You’re truly amazing.” I say, with a smile that could light up any room in the world. He reaches out to me and takes me into his strong capable arms, kissing my head lighter than ever. As if on cue to completely ruin the moment, Kaylee stumbles out of the woods with armfuls of wood and collapses onto the soft sand.

“I get the wood and I come back to find you two hugging? What happened?” Kaylee asks. For the first time ever, I feel bad for her.

“Nothing, Kaylee. I mean, you know that Nick and I are best friends, right? That’s all. No need to worry or anything,” I force out, wincing as I say it. Surprisingly, though, Nick nods and says, “Yeah we were just having a best friend moment. Everybody has them, right?”

Still curious, Kaylee unsurely says, “Well okay…”

“Let’s make a fire, girls. It’s getting dark. Come on.” Nick says as he gathers up the wood.
~~ Two hours later ~~

Being so close to Nick makes me feel so protected. I feel as if someone has just covered me in millions of blankets, my heart is so warm. Unfortunately, I sit and watch as Kaylee flirts with my boyfriend. Boyfriend? Is he my boyfriend? I really don’t know. I can’t stop myself from wondering. Suddenly, the sky flashes with bright yellow lights and the air is filled with the sounds of whooshing blades. Helicopters? How did they find us? We all look up, the most confused looks on our faces, as we wonder how they got here.

“Bailey Emmens, Kaylee Morgansen, and Nick Salveres? We got an S.O.S. call from the pilot of your plane telling us that you were somewhere at sea,” A deep voice booms over a loudspeaker as the spotlight shines on the three of us as if we were onstage.

We all look at each other and scream, “That’s us!!”

A ladder drops from the helicopter and one by one, Nick, Kaylee, and I climb up and into the safeness of the helicopter.

“We’re going to take you home,” The pilot says to us.

I put my head on Nick’s shoulder, pull my knees into my chest, wrap my arms around my knees, and quietly fall asleep.

Three hours later, I wake up in my room, in the warm cocoon of my bed, with Nick’s warm body next to mine. Smiling, I touch his arm and doze back to sleep.

What’s to come? I’m wondering the same thing that you are. Will Nick and I stay together? Will Kaylee be nicer than she was when we were stuck on the island? All of these questions invade my mind every time I think. Hopefully, everything will turn out great and these questions will be answered. But for now, I’m so happy to have what I have, and I would never look back. To all the girls out there who think that nothing turns out right, just wait; it will. Everything will always turn out okay in the end. You’ll experience heartbreak, love, even hate, and though these things shouldn’t take over your life, you will indeed feel them at some point. Be your own person and never look back. Your future is up to you.

  3. A romance! Here were my clues: perfectly attractive characters, a plane crash with no trauma, dialogue that is quirky and fun, and of course, as you said, "Everything will always turn out okay in the end."
Now for a challenge: can you write an irony?
